5 ’90s Horror Movies Hidden Under the Stairs

When you think of horror movies of the 1990s, you may think of Scream (1996) or Candyman (1992) or many other movies except possibly the ones that were overlooked or forgotten in time. There are many of those gems hidden, lost under the proverbial stairs, however, let’s look at 5 of them.

5. People Under the Stairs (1991)

Starting us off is none other than The People Under the Stairs (1991). See what I did there? While this dark comedy from Wes Craven takes some serious dark turns, it won’t disappoint. It follows a young boy and two criminals who break into the boy’s landlord’s home to find a terrible and gruesome secret. And for any Lynch fans out there, it features Everett McGill and Wendy Robie from Twin Peaks (they played Big Ed Hurley and his wife, Nadine Hurley, respectively).

4. Arachnophobia (1990)

If you aren’t a spider lover, than spiders may invoke an innate fear just at the very mention. However, Arachnophobia (1990) reminds us just how scary they can be. Even with comedic greats like Jeff Daniels and John Goodman at the helm, this movie still packs a horrific punch that is sure to add a little fun this Halloween.

3. The Addiction (1995)

Two names, Lili Taylor and Christopher Walken. Theme… vampires. Throw it together in black and white and you’ve got The Addiction (1995). Need more convincing? Two more names, Edie Falco and Michael Imperioli of The Sopranos (1999-2007)…. forget about it! But actually don’t because you’ll want to watch this movie.

2. Event Horizon (1997)

This one isn’t for the faint of heart. It may be too gory for some. However, Event Horizon (1997) is one of the most underrated horror movies out there. If a space crew needs to go on a rescue mission into deep space, you would think that people would know after Alien (1979) that things aren’t going to end well. Yet… if you love space, messed up horror, Sam Neill, and Laurence Fishburne then you will get a scream out of this movie. Let us know what you think down below when you have!

1. Dead Alive (1992)

Before The Lord of the Rings film trilogy made Peter Jackson a household name, he was making films like Dead Alive (1992). Speaking of outrageous gore, this movie balances camp and gore for a ghoulishly good time. When the description begins with rat-monkey and an over bearing mother you know things are going to get fun. Think John Waters meets House (1985) meets Peter Jackson.

While these are just but 5 horror movies that deserve a little extra love this spooky season, we know there are so many more that could be listed. Do you have some that come to mind? Let us know below or hit us up on social media! Better yet, pop into the store and let us know! We are always on the lookout for more horror movies to watch! 📼
